Major League Baseball's New Rules Are Great For The Game.
Hey Substack Audience, it’s been a while. I apoligize. Haven’t had much time to sit down and really put thoughts to paper…er…internet page…in a while. Combination of writer’s block and free time. I hope to get back some more time here soon, so if you have gotten this far, thanks for your continued support.
The dawn of a new MLB season is a week from now.
The game is riding a high of momentum. An absolutely fantastic World Baseball Classic has the sports world buzzing. It’s hard to believe that these games outdrew some of the March Madness tournament is all the evidence you need.
I know I have been critical of Rob Manfred’s tenure in charge of MLB, but I have to give credit where it’s due. The man has balls. Three MASSIVE rule changes in the offseason.
Bigger Bases
Pitch Clock
Shift Ban
Originally, I was skeptical of the moves, as a “traditionalist” of sorts. Much to my mother’s chagrin, I was a fan of the Designated Hitter in the National League. Other than that, don’t mess with my baseball.
But I don’t hate these moves. In fact, these rules are great for the game.
I hear your arguments. The pitch clock took some time for me to adjust to.
Here’s the big reason I like the moves.
It’s going back to what Baseball WAS.
I can’t remember the amount of times I’ve heard an older baseball fan complain about how the game isn’t what it used to be. It’s all home run’s and strike outs. No one appreciates base hits and good baserunning.
Ok, they have addressed those issues now. The game is faster, there’s more “ball in-play.” You can watch a game in under 3 hours.
It’s everything you wanted, you just like complaining.
“That’s it, I’m not gonna watch!”
Yes you are. Don’t kid yourself.
